Edison Middle School Mural

In 2022, Fresh Arts hired Magnolia Park Arts & Community to curate a landmark public art project at Edison Middle School, funded by Port Houston's Community Grants Program.

MPAC president Jesse E. Rodriguez, aka Magnolia Grown, led the curation and selected Houston-based muralist José "Meenr" Arredondo for the commission. When Jesse curates for Magnolia Park, he is deliberate — not just art on a wall, but fine art in the neighborhood.

Before a single brushstroke was made, Jesse facilitated a month-long series of community meetings and school visits, gathering input from Edison students, parents, faculty, alumni, and longtime Magnolia Park residents. That community voice shaped everything.

The result is a 150-foot mural on the exterior west wing of Edison Middle School, facing S/Sgt Macario Garcia Drive. It celebrates the school's 100-year legacy and honors the rich Hispanic history of Magnolia Park, one of Houston's oldest Latino neighborhoods — depicting students, neighborhood landmarks, and symbols of the community's past, present, and future.

The unveiling on November 5, 2022, drew nearly 150 attendees, including students, alumni, longtime residents, city officials, and State Representative Ana Hernandez.
